O'Neil Residence

Charleston, SC

< Single Family

This new one story residence was designed to eventually become a permanent retirement home for a couple looking to escape the New England winters. Designed in the vernacular of the low country of Charleston, the final scheme needed to be approved by the local development, which had very strict requirement on porches, window and roof proportions.

The crossing front entry corridors are highlighted by a dome ceiling containing lights to emulate the night stars. To provide visual interest and wall space for the owners' extensive art collection, the long corridor was stepped and lit with 90 small recessed adjustable lights. The kitchen opens up to the family room which is surrounded generously by windows to the private backyard which also contains a pergola.

A second floor was planned for resale value with skylights and stair, but was unfinished at the time. The garage, actually a carport, was dressed up with columns and details matching the house. It also includes a workroom that is secure at the back for tools and trash.
